Dusty Rhodes‘ last match was in a six-man tag team match, teaming with sons Dustin Rhodes and Cody Rhodes for the first time in his career.
The WWE Hall of Famer previously tagged with Dustin Rhodes in WCW, and with Cody Rhodes in 2006 in FCW. However, he had never shared the ring with both his sons, and this match gave him a unique opportunity.
The Rhodes family took on Caylen Croft, Curt Hawkins, & Trent Berreta on July 9th 2010 in Kissimme, in Florida. FCW was WWE’s developmental promotion at the time, where Dusty Rhodes was a trainer and commentator in FCW.
The former NWA World’s Heavyweight Champion had been long retired. He last match before that was in 2007, losing to Randy Orton in a Texas Bullrope Match.
The American Dream was hired by WWE not to wrestle, but to help guide the next generation of talent to develop. Dusty Rhodes was later known for doing just that in NXT some years later.
The match took place because Dusty wanted one last chance to team with both his kids. As the father of the two WWE stars, Dusty Rhodes wanted to tag with his two sons just once in WWE, and was able to in this six-man tag team match in FCW.
The WWE recently posted the footage of Dusty Rhodes’ final match, which you can watch in the video at the end of this article.
He was 65-years-old at the time of the match, so well past his prime. The American Dream likely took very little part in the bout, with his sons doing the bulk of the work.
Dusty Rhodes retired for good after this match, and went to become a father figure of the superstars in NXT, helping train some of the brightest stars in WWE and some current WWE main eventers.
He sadly passed away in 2015, aged on 69. He was honored with a tournament, the Dusty Rhodes Classic, named after him in NXT.
Curt Hawkins Explains Wrestling in Dusty Rhodes’ Last Match
Curt Hawkins (TNA’s Brian Myers) revealed what it was like to compete in the wrestling legend’s final outing. He teamed with Trent Beretta and Caylen Croft in the iconic, yet surprising match.
He spoke with Sports Illustrated, and talked about being a part of Dusty Rhodes’ final ever wrestling match. Hawkins revealed that the match ended with h
“It’s a little known fact, but I actually had his last match ever. He wanted to tag with Dustin and Cody. So in the summer of 2010, me, Trent Barreta, and Caylen Croft as the Dude Busters main-evented an FCW show against the Rhodes.”
“It was the only time the Rhodes boys ever tagged, and it was Dusty’s last match ever. The match ended with me taking an elbow from Dusty. It was very, very cool, and I was very, very honored.”
